inerkickHi Team. Yesterday I installed DevuanAscii using CD1 ISO. Howevever midway I lost the internet connection while it was installation some softwares. Now it said I can install it later . It gave me only terminal login, how to access the GUI. Kindly help, startx and ctrl+alt+F7 isn't working to get in02:55
inerkickI am able to give login , password in tty102:57
djphdid you install a desktop environment?03:02
inerkickit didn't give me that option that time03:02
inerkickI need to I guess, while installation i lost the network,03:03
djphcould be just easier to reinstall03:03
inerkicknow i'm only getting the tty1 when I boot up. It completed the installation but missed many packages03:03
inerkickis it like sudo apt-get install lxde as such03:04
inerkickor is there any other way, i mean issue related to breaking of internet03:04
inerkickand I'm not sure how to access internet from tty1, could you help help, djph03:04
djphyes, the issue is "you didn't get all the packages"03:05
inerkickright03:05
djphand the easiest fix is "reinstall"03:06
inerkickok thanks03:06
g4570ninerkick: try tasksel03:06
inerkickwill go with that than03:06
inerkicki got a window g4570n with tasksel but i gave xfce, it got me debconf failed to run03:07
g4570nok03:08
inerkickIs there anyway I can connect to my wifi and install that package left out? g4570n03:09
inerkickor would you suggest to reinstall03:09
g4570nI think it's best to reinstall03:12
golinuxFTR, the netinstall is not a good choice for an unstable connection.  pkgs that make things more functional are on the other CDs. Use the DVD on desktop-live03:35
golinuxDVD OR desktop-live for a complete install.03:35
inerkickHi . I recently installed Devuan Ascii using CD.iso with a USB drive. However when I try to install other package through synaptic package manager I am getting "Please insert the disk labeled devuan_ascii_2.0.0_amd64_cd_1 in drive/media/cdrom/ .. what to do? It's not even allowing me to insert pendrive and check that05:14
inerkickany tip05:28

Criggieok - edit /etc/apt/sources.list and comment out the CD line05:37
Criggiethen try again05:37
inerkicki was just doing that while searched on google. Thanks Criggie05:46
golinuxinerkick: I posted this earlier but you had gone.05:55
golinux<golinux> FTR, the netinstall is not a good choice for an unstable connection.  pkgs that make things more functional are on the other CDs. Use the DVD on desktop-live05:55
inerkickI was told by one friend that networkmanager isn't availabe? Is it true?05:56
golinuxOops (again) DVD or desktop-live to get a desktop up and running (if that's what you want).05:56
inerkicki already got it up and running and was installing other packages,, golinux05:56
inerkickwonder why there was no network manager05:56
golinuxYour friend is wrong: https://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/d1pkgweb-query?search=network-manager&release=ascii05:57
inerkickthank you golinux05:57
golinuxGood to hear you got it worked out.05:57
inerkickyes.05:58
inerkickI have few issues and still wrapping my head around05:58
inerkicklike why not mouse tap click not working05:58
inerkickit didn't add me as sudo user too at the beginning05:58
golinuxWould need more info than that to troubleshoot.05:59
golinuxThis is not Ubuntu.  Sudo is not enabled by default.05:59
inerkickI mean when I tried to install deb packages it was asking me to give CD path in media05:59
golinuxThere would have been an option to do that in the installer iirc.06:00
inerkickand I have to remove that, and I couldn't sudo edit the sources.list path06:00
inerkickso i just added the sudo path and than got debi package manager06:00
golinuxTry su06:00
inerkickjust got it now06:00
golinuxGreat.06:01
inerkickhow to install network manager from https://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/d1pkgweb-query?search=network-manager&release=ascii06:01
inerkickthat link?06:01
inerkickthere are so many06:01
inerkicksorry for being naive . Just new to this06:01
golinuxInstall from terminal or synaptic06:02
inerkickcool06:02
golinuxpkginfo is just to check if something is available06:02
inerkickah ok06:03
inerkick i thought it's like ppa06:03
golinuxAnd for which release06:03
golinuxNo ppas here06:03
inerkickok06:03
golinuxAnd ONLY use devuan repos.  Debian or other sources could break your system.06:04
inerkickhow to know that06:04
inerkicki was installing networkmanager gnome from synpatic manager now06:05
inerkickand i already installed vscode06:05
golinuxhttps://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/d1pkgweb-query?search=vscode&release=ascii06:05
golinuxWhere did you get that?06:06
golinuxAh,  Open Source not free (libre) software.  That license is a kicker.06:08
golinuxWhy would you do that do your beautiful Devuan system?06:09
inerkick_hi golinux06:10
golinuxI answered while you were away.06:10
inerkick_sorry I keep losing network06:10
golinuxYou can read it here https://botbot.me/freenode/devuan/06:11
inerkick_thanks06:11
inerkick_so you mean vscode shouldn't be used at all?06:12
inerkick_i need to install elixir, erlang and vscode.06:16
golinuxIt's your choice to turn Linux into windows.06:16
golinuxWhy not just use Windows?06:17
inerkick_:D06:17
inerkick_I don't mind using other editor,06:17
golinuxI have never heard of any of those applications.06:18
inerkick_Oh I'm sorry than06:18
inerkick_there are many open source contributors using so many applications and some are from windows too06:18
golinuxNot to be sorry.  Just if you're going to use Linux , use native libre software.06:19
inerkick_and some got different license as well06:19
inerkick_libre software is not for software coding06:19
golinuxThe fact that that doesn't matter to you is disturbing.06:19
* gnarface blinks twice06:19
inerkick_Are you a programmer?06:20
golinuxHUH?06:20
inerkick_do you code?06:20
golinuxgnarface: Please take over, this is creeping me out.06:20
gnarfacei had better not06:21
golinuxinerkick.  Yes in a text editor.06:21
inerkick_which one do you use?06:21
golinuxI need to do other things.06:21
golinuxpluma06:21
gnarfaceinerkick_: i think you've got some misconceptions about GPL licenses06:21
inerkick_great, just as pluma so are many other editors isn't?06:22
inerkick_like geany06:22
gnarfaceif you thihk that libre software is "not meant for software coding" due to something about 'viral licenses' you've been lied to and mislead, quite blatantly06:22
golinuxbbl06:22
gnarfacethere are no libre text editors that impose license restrictions on what you use to write them06:22
golinuxMaybe move to #debian-fork?06:22
golinuxOops #debianfork06:23
gnarfaceyea this isn't really a topic for the support channel to begin with06:23
golinuxTata06:23
inerkick_cool06:23
hiyaHey10:00
hiyaHow to beautify XFCE?10:00
hiyaI want nice and clean interface, it just sucks as of now.10:00
goo__guys I'm trying to sign up to the devuan forums, what's the default devuan login manager?11:55
goo__apparently not elogind11:55
debdoggoo__: https://files.devuan.org/devuan_ascii/Release_notes.txt see section "### Session management and policykit backends"11:57
goo__oh well apparently it's neither elogind nor consolekit12:05
goo__cool12:06
KatolaZgoo__: it depends on the DE you are using12:16
goo__yeah I saw12:16
KatolaZelogind/consolekit are session managers, not login managers12:17
goo__I managed to register anyway12:17
goo__hey KatolaZ12:17
goo__I'm posting on the forums about the apt issue12:17
KatolaZgoo__: OK12:17
goo__There's gonna be a full description of my setup and everything I've tried12:17
KatolaZgreat12:18
KatolaZlooks pretty strange though12:18
KatolaZsince you are not the first one who debootstraps on an arm12:18
goo__I don't know, it might be because I used --variant=minbase, but that's still weird and also shouldn't be a problem12:20
goo__since what other installation are you gonna do on servers12:20
rrqgoo_: did you try "slim" ?12:36
* rrq reading more backlog12:36
goo__rrq: nope, but I got to register eventually12:37
rrqcheers12:38
goo__are you okay with me posting a backlog of the chat to the forums?12:54
goo__like a link to the backlog where we speak of the issue12:54
debdogshould be fine. AFAIK the channel is logged anyway12:55
debdoghttps://botbot.me/freenode/devuan/12:55
goo__okay, ty12:57
goo__aight, here it is https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?pid=10790#p1079013:01
Uberiusis it possible to install devuan on a raspberry pi 3 and if so where can i download the ARM compatible ISO from?16:15
jaromilUberius: yes. see files.devuan.org16:16
Uberiusjaromil, thank you16:16
jaromilthis is likely the fastest mirror https://mirror.leaseweb.com/devuan/devuan_ascii/embedded/16:16
Uberiushttps://files.roundr.devuan.org/devuan_ascii/embedded/16:16
Uberiusyes!!!!!16:16
Uberiusmany thanks!16:17
jaromilwelcome16:17
Uberiusanother stupid question: what's the difference between devuan_ascii_2.0.0_arm64_raspi3.img.xz and devuan_ascii_2.0.0_arm64_raspi3.tar.gz ?16:18
KatolaZone in an image, the other one is a tarball16:19
UberiusKatolaZ, ok16:19
Uberiusin that case, should i use dd to write the image on a USB stick and considering the USB device as /dev/sdb would the command to perform be dd if=~/devuan_ascii_2.0.0_arm64_raspi3.img.xz of=/dev/sdb ?16:21
Digithrm.  where would i look at the logs for what caused my crash?  my cores filled up n choked out my machine to abrubtly power off, mere seconds from realising there was slowdown and pressing keybind to bring up htop right before PEEEEOWWWWWWWWWW shutdown.  was only running xmonad emacs xterm terminology htop firefox mpv.  fresh (a day or so ago) upgraded ceres.16:47
gnarfaceUberius: no that image is compressed with xz.  you need to uncompress it16:53
Uberiusgnarface, thanks!16:53
gnarfaceDigit: look at the most recent logs in /var/log/16:53
gnarfaceUberius: no problem16:53
Digitthnx gnarface.   as per suggestion, looked.  but no significant clues. seems that unwanted shutdown will remain a mystery.17:24
_stephen_Digit: did you also check the old dmesg logs in there?  Last time my system behaved like that it was overheating.17:28
Digityup.  no clues i can fathom17:31
gnarfacewhat happens in the messages or user log at that time?17:32
gnarfaceany chance it shut down by keyboard command?17:32
Digiti'm very certain it wasnt that.  it shut down just as i had pulled up htop, seeing all cores maxed out.   overheating it may have been.  but i'd still like to find what it was that decided to chew up all cores n max out.17:35
_stephen_If the system didn't actually shut down, but was powered off by the BIOS, you might not have any log messages.17:36
Digitthe answer's probably in those logs i skimmed through.17:36
Digitah.  thnx _stephen_.17:36
_stephen_In which case you might want to check to see if your BIOS has any settings for temperature issues17:37
Digitwell, i'm gonna leave my right side monitor on, with htop, so if it happens again, i'll have more chance of catching sight of the culprit.17:37
_stephen_My older system was like that, powered off when overheated, my newer system has time to write warnings to dmesg and even throttles the cpu so it doesn't always power off when overheating.17:37
Digitfound it.   it's teeworlds.  :>  looks like i dont get to play teeworlds on my new kernel.  spikes up past 600% cpu within seconds of starting.17:40
Digitforgot to mention i was running it.  n_n17:40
Digitit also seems to ignore my settings.cfg now when it starts too.  oh well, now i have suspects n clues, the debug adventure is on.  n_n17:42
gnarfaceDigit: try enabling vsync in the game17:46
Digiti've tried uninstalling it.  lol.  i play it too much anyway.  this is for the better.  n_n17:47
_stephen_oh crap, I shouldn't have googled that17:48
Digithrm.  minetest, once in the game, was deciding to use up about 400% cpu.   seems since upgrade, nvidia's saying "you do the thinking" to my cpu.17:50
_stephen_There are settings to make that better.17:50
_stephen_But also check and make sure direct rendering is on, you might be doing software rendering...17:50
Digit"glxinfo | grep direct" gives "direct rendering: Yes".   :/  i rather thought that was a winning ticket there.18:12
_stephen_Maybe minetest has video_driver set to software?18:21
_stephen_relevant config info: https://wiki.minetest.net/Minetest.conf18:21
_stephen_the two devuan boxes my children play that on needed explicit graphics settings otherwise performance was terrible18:23
Digitthing is... neither teeworlds nor minetest were problematic before.18:23
_stephen_Oh18:23
Digitnot sure what that (overdue?) upgrade did to cause this18:24
_stephen_the glxinfo didn't happen to say software rendering in its output, did it?18:27
Digitnope.  checked again.18:29
_stephen_I'm at a loss for any kind of explanation for what you're seeing, then.18:29
Digitit's ... it's ...  it's like nvidia cant be trusted.18:29
_stephen_your lsmod show nvidia loaded or nouveau(sp?)18:30
Digitlsmod | egrep 'nvidia|nouveau' shows nvidia18:31
_stephen_Well, I'm out of ideas.18:32
Digiti'm tempted to try booting into older kernel~ as a clutching at straws effort.    or... i see there's a newer one just out since i upgraded.   might as well try that.  n_n18:33
Digitor... just give up gaming. lol18:33
Digitokies... ima reboot this beast again, see if i can get it mended after upgrades.19:07
KatolaZgoo_: :)19:17
KatolaZgoo_: glad to see that you solved the problem, eventually19:19
* Digit eyes /lib/systemd/systemd-udevd --daemon with suspicion19:56
Digiti presume, i hope, that's not actual systemd stuff slipped into ceres19:56
KatolaZDigit: udev was subsumed into the systemd several years ago...20:01
KatolaZin ascii you have eudev20:01
KatolaZwhich is the same stuff only removed from the systemd tree20:01
KatolaZand maintained by a bunch of people at gentoo20:01
* Digit gets synaptic to install eudev, and allows it to uninstall the udev stuff, while wondering how his system got like that20:03
KatolaZDigit: use the eudev in ascii though20:04
KatolaZI mean, the eudev from ascii20:04
Digit?  not the one in cere?20:04
Digitceres*20:04
KatolaZthere are a few glitches in the ceres version20:04
KatolaZthat were solved for ascii20:04
KatolaZand have not yet been ported to ceres20:05
KatolaZI know it looks crazy, but this won't happen again20:05
KatolaZwe're going towards a proper experimental/unstable/testing/stable pipeline20:05
* Digit adds ascii to his sources.list, n while updating, tries to remember how to specify20:09
KatolaZDigit: apt-get install -t ascii eudev20:13
Digitceres' eudev 3.2.5-1, that i replace udev 239.5 with, still there, n attempting ^ tells me it's already the newest version.  so i just use synaptic's Package/force version.   even tho that probably only needed a --force or something on command line.20:16
DigitE: /var/cache/apt/archives/eudev_3.2.2-13_amd64.deb: new eudev package pre-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1  oh.20:17
KatolaZDigit: apt-get install -t ascii eudev udev libeudev1 libudev120:29
Digiti need both eudev and udev?20:30
KatolaZyes20:31
KatolaZudev in ascii is a transitional package20:31
Digiteudev : Conflicts: udev (< 1:3.2.5-1)20:33
Digit libeudev1 : Conflicts: libudev1 (< 1:3.2.5-1)20:33
KatolaZDigit: have you used -t ascii ?20:34
Digitpasted the command in like you had it (with sudo).20:34
KatolaZo_O20:35
KatolaZapt-cache policy eudev20:35
Digithttp://dpaste.com/0R2GZ0R20:38
KatolaZDigit: you shouldn't use packages.devuan.org20:39
KatolaZplease use deb.devuan.org20:39
Digit /merged i presume20:46
KatolaZyep20:46
Digitthere we go.  that sorted getting the right eudev at least.  changed all my sources to deb.devuan.org (cept some mirrors).21:04
KatolaZgood Digit21:36
KatolaZhappy it worked21:36
Digitstill got my mystery cant-play-games-without-all-8-cores-filling-up tho.  but it was nice to get that much sorted.  a little cathartic reassurance.  n_n21:38
Digitde-demoralised.  n_n21:38
Achyllesany suggestions for grub themes to install on devuan?23:19
golinuxYou don't like the default in desktop-base?23:20
Achyllesmy "theme" is the blue default one which I'd like to change23:20
golinuxLet me get the screenie23:20
Achyllesmine is the normal Ascii that come as default -> a blue one...23:21
golinuxHow about this? https://dev1galaxy.org/files/grub-final.png23:22
AchyllesI thought there was a grub-themes package in the repo, but there isn't.23:22
AchyllesI think I saw this package some years ago for debian...23:22
golinux/usr/share/desktop-base/23:23
golinuxThat comes with the default xfce theming23:23
Achylles Oh! This one is beautiful. But I did not got that in my default installation, using the netinstall.iso23:25
Achyllesexpert mode23:25
golinuxActually /usr/share/desktop-base/devuan23:25
Achyllesthis, perhaps, come with the devuan live cd23:25
golinuxYou need to install desktop-base23:26
AchyllesI see. I have this desktop theme. But, I want one for grub. Does that fits?23:26
golinuxI don't know if there is another way to get it.  It's got to be in git.d.o and you can get the files from there.  Give me a sec23:26
golinuxI'm not sure how it gets put together.  I just play with the crayons.  Happy to hear that you like it!23:27
golinuxThis is the ascii desktop: https://dev1galaxy.org/files/ascii_desktop.png23:28
golinuxAnd slim: https://dev1galaxy.org/files/slim_ascii.png23:29
Achyllesyeah! I do have the desktop one, but not the one for grub23:31
AchyllesI will try to get the grub one and install it...23:31
Achyllesthanks I have found them in that dir you told me /usr/share/desktop-base/devuan23:36
AchyllesI just want to figure out how to configure that in grub23:36
golinuxIt might be easier to install desktop-base and redo your desktop23:44
golinuxBut if it is installed why isn't is showing up?  What desktop are you using?23:45
AchyllesI do not know.23:46
AchyllesThe readme file says that it is for devuan 1.023:46
AchyllesPerhaps this is the reason23:46
golinuxHuh?  Nobody changed it I guess. The one inthe image is for asciio.23:47
AchyllesMy grub "theme" is only a blue screen. And if I access the advanced options the screen is a black one :(23:48
golinuxWait I have that grub theme installed on Jessie where I worked on the graphics. Let me check ascii in a vm23:49
AchyllesI issued "update-alternatives --config grub-theme", but it says that the theme is installed and there is no other options :(23:49
AchyllesI think I also have ascii on a vm and as far as I can remember, it is also a blue screen...23:50
nacelleyou're literally talking about having a png or some such loaded in a menu, right?23:55
nacelleits not terribly complex to configure it, but the base package should be fixed if its not working23:55
golinuxIt's more complicated than that23:55
golinux/usr/share/desktop-base/devuan23:55
Achylleswhen will be that be fixed?23:57
Achyllesperhaps if devs fix that and users upgrade the package...23:57
golinuxWhat desktop are you using?23:57
AchyllesIt will be easier.23:57
Achyllesascii23:57
Achyllesthe newest23:57
golinuxascii isn't a desktop23:58
Achylleswith xfce423:58
golinuxxfce is a desktop mate is a desktop23:58
Achyllesyes23:58
Achyllessorry23:58
Achyllesdid not think before writing23:58
AchyllesI have xfce4 and mate here23:59
AchyllesI mean in the other machine23:59
golinuxI know it's configured properly on the desktop-live.23:59
Achyllesyes.23:59
AchyllesBut, I tried to install using desktop-live, but I found the installer too complicated23:59
