OneManHateGroupI'm having trouble accessing an old hard drive through usb.03:44
OneManHateGroupI can't see  the files and I can't do anything with them. I've tried to change the permissions with chmod, but I doesn't stick03:45
fsmithredwhat can you see?03:46
OneManHateGroupIt's an old hdd from a lappy that died... I can see the directories, but can't see anything in them03:47
fsmithredtry testdisk03:47
stiltrerrors in dmesg?03:48
OneManHateGrouplike... the "Downloads" directory should definitely have something in it.03:48
fsmithredthere's also ddrescue03:51
gnarfacewell, fsck it first03:51
gnarfaceand if it's a ntfs filesystem, make sure you have edit mode even enabled in your kernel03:52
gnarfaceactually do the second of those first03:52
gnarfaceif the laptop died but the harddrive itself was not physically damaged, it could still leave the filesystem in a bad state, but the right fsck command can sometimes fix it03:53
gnarfaceif the harddrive was physically damaged you're probably out of luck03:53
OneManHateGroupI'll see what fsck03:54
OneManHateGroupsays03:54
gnarfacesmartmontools can also give you some physical diagnostic information03:55
OneManHateGroupthanks03:58
gourmorning10:29
gouri've problem with pulse audio, iow. i've to manualy launch 'pulseaudio --start --daemonize=false', otherwise only  /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xfce4/panel/wrapper-2.0 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xfce4/panel/plugins/libpulseaudio-plugin.so is running. any hint?10:30
xrogaanlo10:36
xrogaanin ceres again?10:36
gourno, beowulf10:37
xrogaanthis one doesn't exists? /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x1110:38
gourxrogaan: it does exist10:38
xrogaanyeah, but is it being launched at sessions start?10:39
gourxrogaan: well, i've 'PulseAudio' selected in autostart10:39
xrogaanI'm not on testing, you should check what pulseaudio does at startup10:44
g0zzyI don't suppose anyone here has unattended-upgrades working? I can't get them to run on Ascii - only Stretch10:46
xrogaanOn a side note, I managed to have mpd run as my user but I have no idea how I did it.11:01
xrogaang0zzy: haven't installed them11:02
gourwhen i removed PA plugin from the panel, nothing which is PA-releted was running on the system, but when i addplugin, then this /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xfce4/panel/wrapper-2.0 wrapper is launched, but there is no sound and mixer is not accessible11:21
g0zzyActually i think i'll try to run unattended explicitly and see what happens13:39
g0zzyOn another matter, i suppose that systemd is going to reduce stability? There have been frequent updates of packages including systemd on my Stretch systems recently13:48
James1138Question. Devuan suggests (not requires) install of tiny-initramfs. Would it help or hurt my using Devuan on my laptop??16:04
fsmithrednever heard of it16:06
James1138https://packages.debian.org/stretch/tiny-initramfs16:07
James1138https://github.com/chris-se/tiny-initramfs16:08
fsmithredyeah, I read the package description16:08
fsmithredstill have no idea if/why it's needed16:08
fsmithredMinimalistic initramfs implementation (automation)16:09
fsmithred This package builds a bootable initramfs for Linux kernel packages.16:09
fsmithredhow is that different from update-initramfs?16:09
fsmithredwhere did you get the suggestion?16:10
fsmithred(What package Suggests it?)16:10
James1138Synaptic suggested it when I right click on the kernel16:11
fsmithredwell, don't get too attached to synaptic. Looks like it's going the way of the dodo.16:15
fsmithredDisclaimer: I exclude Recommends, so Suggests aren't even on the radar.16:16
fsmithredYou don't need it.16:16
golinuxSynaptic is not going the way of the dodo.  http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=14138216:21
golinuxLooks like it will make it into buster.16:22
fsmithredcool. Should be there by next week.16:33
ejrhi. i am trying to get bluetooth to work on devuan ceres. with blueman i cannot connect to any audio devices successfully as I always get a "Protocol not available" error. With rfcomm i can connect to hci0, and even blueman then shows I am connect, but that way I only get a serial port as a connection and the new audio output device does not show up in pavucontrol, so i still get no sound from it19:20
gnarfaceare you using pulseaudio?19:21
gnarfacebluetooth audio support was removed from alsa years back19:21
gnarfacethere's some 3rd party forks of it still floating around the internet somewhere but i don't know exactly where19:22
ejryes, pulseaudio. i have also loaded the bluetooth module afaik19:22
gnarfacehmm, theoretically it should still work with pulseaudio19:22
ejrit did once work, but i forgot how i set it up back then, and i think it was under debian still19:23
gnarfacehmm. i do have a bluetooth device here that stopped working around kernel 3.119:23
gnarfaceif it was really that long ago maybe you ran into the same issue19:23
gnarfaceis it only audio that doesn't work?19:24
gnarfacecan you transfer files with obex and stuff?19:24
ejri don't know, i only have two audio devices with bluetooth, no smartphone or so19:24
ejrmaybe bluez-alsa is the 3rd party fork you were refering to about alsa... i could try that19:26
gnarfaceyes, i think that's the one19:26
gnarfaceit used to be part of debian19:26
gnarfacebefore pulseaudio absorbed the functionality19:26
ejri will see if that works...19:26
gnarfaceit's worth a try anyway19:27
ejrotherwise i'll just have to revert to good old cable19:27
gnarfacedon't forget to check permissions19:32
gnarfacethey won't behave the same as with systemd19:32
gnarfacei'd assume if you got a serial terminal you have that part covered, but just be sure19:32
gnarfacei seem to remember having to go out of the way to find a simple pairing app too19:33
gnarfaceit was the same type of thing19:35
gnarfacewhere they'd removed a perfectly good stand-alone app with the lame excuse that the functionality was duplicated by some integrated gnome atrocity or something like that19:35
gnarfacei assume it was all about someone19:39
gnarface...someone's ill-conceived attempt to simulate vendor lock-in with debian19:39
gnarfacebut i also just ended up giving up on bluetooth over it19:40
ejryeah, it sucks that bluetooth has become so hard to use on linux, especially considering how every stupid smartphone handles it so well19:43
climbingturtle1796moh20:12
climbingturtleit's been a long day..20:13
golinuxHello climbingturtle.  Haven't seen you around much20:33
golinuxWas really nice to meet you at the conf20:33
golinuxSorry I have to run.  bbl20:34
James1138Sorry... was away. What about this Debian package to add firmware support for bluetooth??  https://packages.debian.org/stretch/bluez-firmware20:34
James1138https://support.system76.com/articles/bluetooth/ -  Troubleshoot Bluetooth Issues20:35
climbingturtlegolinux: Hi :D Yes that is true, been busy with friends and some work, especially now when the weather has been so nice and warm here. Though I'm of work the next 4 days so much focus will be on my computers!20:44
climbingturtleafk some now aswell, cooking some food20:44
golinuxSee you around then21:01
golinuxclimbingturtle: ^^^21:01
* fsmithred tries to remember who climbingturtle is. Were you sitting next to me at the table?21:12
golinuxYoung lad from Sweden21:15
_abc_Hi. fsmithred ? May I ask if you have a decent live-boot walkthrough somewhere? Writeup or graphical or whatever?21:18
_abc_I am working on the unclean-umount of live-boot mounted persistence volumes issue21:18
_abc_Relevant to devuan live-boot and other applications of live-boot with persistence, including with LUKS21:18
_abc_https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_USB#Examples_of_Live_USB_operating_systems devuan is missing21:19
_abc_Also refracta2usb is missing.21:19
fsmithred_abc_, no, I don't. Check the debian-live manual and man live-boot (or maybe21:19
_abc_fsmithred: editing the wikipedia entry to add refracta2usb and devuan would go to your credit. Do it imo.21:20
fsmithredI did that a few years ago and got edited out21:20
ashleykthese tenable people are so ridiculous21:22
ashleykthey wont even give you urls you can wget to download their crappy software21:22
_abc_fsmithred: wow.21:22
_abc_fsmithred: did you provide links to the sites like devuan.org etc?21:23
ashleykoops wrong window21:23
_abc_I'm tempted to try that now fsmithred , see what happens21:23
fsmithredI don't think devuan existed at the time21:23
fsmithredand r2u isn't in the devuan repo yet21:23
_abc_fsmithred: the link to the r2u page again please? I it tedious to locate.21:24
fsmithredrefracta.org21:24
fsmithreddocumentation21:24
_abc_That's the distribution itself, no?21:24
fsmithredhttps://refracta.org/docs/readme.refracta2usb.txt21:25
fsmithredit's all intertwined and confusing21:25
fsmithredI need to go carry some wood in. Back in a few minutes.21:26
gnarfaceJames1138: bluetooth firmware is probably packaged by brand21:43
James1138Ahh21:44
gnarface(and in non-free)21:44
gnarfacei guess ymmv depending21:45
gnarfacei thought the broadcom ones were in a separate package though21:45
gnarfacehttps://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/d1pkgweb-query?search=firmware&release=any21:46
gnarfacei'm don't think they always even distinguish between bluetooth and wifi21:47
gnarfacesome devices do both21:47
_abc_fsmithred: edited, lame but all is in: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_USB#Examples_of_Live_USB_operating_systems21:57
fsmithred_abc_, that's a list of distributions, so it should probably say Refracta instead of refracta2usb, which is the tool22:01
fsmithredwow, nice write-up. Thanks.22:02
_abc_Yes but refracta2usb makes such live bootable distribs and should have it's own page.22:02
_abc_imo22:02
_abc_imnsho22:02
fsmithredit used to be listed on a page that had all live-usb creators22:02
_abc_Thanks for contributing that22:02
_abc_We'll see if it lasts. I backed it up22:03
fsmithredcool, thanks22:03
fsmithredso, I also wanted to say that you have to look at the live-boot and live-config scripts22:03
fsmithrednot everything in them is documented22:03
_abc_I noticed it is not </iced over sarcasm>22:04
_abc_Ok, starting fresh, done with wikipedia22:04
_abc_Reading manpage and so on now.22:04
fsmithredlol22:04
_abc_fsmithred: this is interesting, r2u is there too https://infogalactic.com/info/List_of_tools_to_create_Live_USB_systems22:17
_abc_bummer that page exists already on wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tools_to_create_Live_USB_systems -- so what I did is superfluous.22:19
_abc_EXCEPT refracta2usb is not on the wikipedia page... hmm22:20
_abc_fsmithred: did you have a fallout with someone at wikipedia or err debian? :)22:20
fsmithrednot that I know abaout22:20
fsmithredabout22:20
_abc_odd22:20
fsmithredI've done a very good job of staying out of online fights for the last 10 years22:21
_abc_I stopped counting them a long time ago, not worth it.22:21
fsmithredbut, ya know, I did switch my distribution to be based on devuan22:21
fsmithredso maybe I am the enemy and don't know it22:22
_abc_$3/mo internet means "walmart people" are all online now. And it shows. I've been online since 1995 or so, before that modem stuff, then Compuserve, then raw internet. It's been going downhill all the way. And all the nice discussions on usenet and MIT piclist I was on are gone.22:22
fsmithredno, it disappeared before that22:22
ashleyk_abc_, hah what is a "walmart people"22:35
ashleyk$100/mo internet means "publix people" are all online now looo22:36
_abc_pubic people? Sorry could not resist.22:39
_abc_ashleyk: publix?22:39
ashleykexpensive place to get the same thing at walmart22:40
_abc_ashleyk: http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/ <off topic?22:40
_abc_ashleyk: oh, you mean wannabe apple fanbois? :)22:40
ashleyk_abc_, when you have the best prices, everyone comes to your store :)22:40
golinuxYeah, good off-topic for #debian fork22:41
golinuxPlease head over there . . .22:41
_abc_yes, sir22:42
fsmithredma'am22:42
_abc_oh22:43
tuxd3vHello all22:50
_abc_fsmithred: option fastboot influences /etc/fstab checking as on the live squashfs or at initrd time?23:16
fsmithredhuh?23:19
_abc_cli kernel option fastboot, un-skips checking fs's in /etc/fstab, but which /etc fstab, the one in the initrd or the one in the live mounted squashfs ?23:20
fsmithredthere's a nofastboot option23:20
_abc_Yes that. Sorry. nofastboot23:20
fsmithredI don't know the answer23:21
_abc_Also most live-* scripts must be in the initrd to work, right?23:21
fsmithredum23:21
fsmithredhard disk23:21
fsmithredIf you have static23:21
fsmithred           filesystems on your harddisk and you want them to be checked at boot time, use this parameter,23:21
_abc_At boot time, in live boot mode, the live-* scripts should be on the initrd?23:21
fsmithredyes23:21
_abc_Okay, I think I get the picture. I am working on the issue of live persistence a) not fscking the persistence candidates before mounting them, and b) not umounting them cleanly using mount -o remount,ro at reboot time23:22
_abc_Thanks for the tips.23:22
fsmithredpatch-initrd in r2u messes with those scripts in initrd23:22
_abc_The current initrd in devuan ascii is compressed using the usual crazy -9 options per debian standard initrd?23:23
fsmithredit is the same23:23
_abc_fsmithred: oh? So a r2u generated initrd will have changed options wrt vanilla hybrid iso from devuan.org?23:23
fsmithredexcept in the minimal-live isos23:23
_abc_Please go on?23:24
fsmithredr2u will change the initrd only if you do that deliberately23:24
_abc_i.e. run the patch script? What does it add to the system?23:24
fsmithredcan make it so you can write to the ro partition23:24
fsmithredmodified live-* scripts23:25
_abc_Oh I remount that manually as rw, write to it, then remount ro.23:25
_abc_I.e. did not patch the initrd23:25
fsmithredit also allows you use persistent loopfiles on the first partition23:25
_abc_fsmithred: does the patch ever get run from the menu? r2u menu?23:26
fsmithredyeah, it's in there.23:26
_abc_that was horrible wording23:26
_abc_Is in there, but will it be executed automatically from the ui?23:26
fsmithrednothing gets done automatically23:27
_abc_How can I tell if the patch was run? By looking at a specific file in the unpacked initrd?23:27
fsmithredI always prefer to allow the user to break their own system23:27
_abc_I don't remember selecting any patch initrd options in r2u, I do remember a message about the patch script.23:27
_abc_fsmithred: great23:27
fsmithredit's on page 223:27
fsmithredTools menu23:28
_abc_I saw it but I think I did not run it. Is there a quick way to look inside an initrd file and see if it was modified?23:28
fsmithredlsinitramfs23:28
fsmithredwill show files23:28
fsmithredI don't recall if there are any unique files added23:29
_abc_I have /usr/lib/refracta2usb/functions/functions.patch-initrd installed from r2u, is this the script?23:29
fsmithredhang on23:29
fsmithredyeah23:29
_abc_ok23:29
fsmithredlook at the patch_files dir, too23:30
_abc_Imo you should mass sed your scripts and add an attribution and version number in the headers. I hate disowned scripts floating around :)23:30
fsmithredthose get put in the initrd23:30
_abc_patch_files where? On the r2u system or on the live/hybrid?23:30
_abc_ok23:30
fsmithredusr/lib/refracta2usb/patch_files23:30
_abc_Ok, will look @23:31
_abc_Why did you choose gz compression for the initrd when rebuilt? Typically it is xz now?23:31
_abc_# use gz or xz compression for the custom initrd23:31
_abc_RECOMPRESS="gz"23:31
fsmithredgz was standard when that was written, but both are there23:32
_abc_ok23:32
_abc_You used bash $" " strings for translation (in the future?) reasons, or other reasons?23:33
fsmithredfor translation, but I don't know if anything ever happened with that23:34
_abc_ok23:34
fsmithredpossibly in exegnulinux23:35
_abc_I have no idea what that is, sorry.23:35
fsmithreddevuan respin with trinity desktop (TDE)23:36
_abc_The unclean umount issue is biting hard23:42
_abc_On a r2u made hybrid stick, I keep getting FSCKxxxx.REC files even on the 1st ro mounted partition, the initrd is unpatched, so mounted ro23:42
fsmithredthey're in the root of the stick?23:43
fsmithredI've only seen that a couple of times23:43
_abc_root? In the 1st partition23:43
fsmithredyeah, root of the filesystem23:43
_abc_I have a FSCK0000.REC which is 118784 in size and identifies with file as ELF 32-bit LSB shared object23:43
_abc_strings shows some syslinux related stuff in it.23:44
_abc_I do not have another syslinux lib file that size on the media23:44
_abc_Can you look if you have it unpacked, maybe there is some file with that size?23:44
_abc_Interesting, the persistence files are not in the initrd? Is this normal?23:46
_abc_Upon live boot completion, would files written into the initrd override files in the live system mounted on the squashfs?23:47
_abc_I think the last boot step consists in copying the initrd's parts into the mounted overlay, no?23:48
fsmithredswitch root or pivot root23:48
_abc_Yes but is there a copy step after that?23:48
_abc_Or before that?23:48
fsmithrednot sure23:49
_abc_Looks like I need to add that at some point.23:49
_abc_The whole persistence business lives on the squashfs not on the initrd as is now.23:49
_abc_I would like to edit only the initrd, not touch / remaster the squashfs.23:50
_abc_Only persistence related things I could find in the initrd are lib/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-storage.rules and so on23:50
_abc_Note this particular initrd belongs to wheezy not devuan, should be the same.23:50
fsmithredoh23:51
fsmithrednot necessarily23:51
_abc_Persistence does work fine with that initrd, it boots cleanly (so far)23:51
_abc_I'll postpone deleting the FSCK0000.REC some, I have no idea what file that was, could be important23:51
_abc_uhh? Why? /usr/lib/refracta2usb/patch_files/bin/boot/2010-remove-persistence23:53
fsmithrednot sure23:54
_abc_Ah, persistence is "built into" the live system, the script live-persistence is used to install it not to run it.23:54
_abc_Looking23:54
fsmithredThat might get used if your persistent volume is on the first partition23:55
_abc_It is not23:55
fsmithredno, I don't think that's a stock file.23:55
fsmithreddzz wrote that23:55
_abc_I did not patch the initrd, so it is on the disk of the "host" not on the hybrid being edited23:55
_abc_Crap that FSCK0000.REC makes me want to check if the stick still boots.23:56
_abc_I had a really hard time persuading qemu to boot wheezy and devuan.23:56
fsmithredyou haven't tried it?23:56
_abc_fsmithred: only under qemu for now, also on a real system, but did not wait for it to boot to gui, it started nicely23:56
_abc_fsmithred: do you know, by heart, which shutdown script handles "noeject" ?23:58
fsmithredfsck.fat 3.0.27 (2014-11-12)23:58
fsmithred0x41: Dirty bit is set. Fs was not properly unmounted and some data may be corrupt.23:58
fsmithredNo, I haven't messed with noeject23:59
_abc_fsmithred: I told you the unclean umount thing is BAD. Both for the root fs and for in my case the 2nd fs which is persistence23:59
fsmithredgrep for it in /lib/live/boot23:59
_abc_nada23:59
