EHeMI've been seeing this for a few days, I think I've seen 131.188.12.211 come up several times, but previously I didn't encounter so many problems all at once.00:30
onefangWhat are you doing though?00:31
EHeM`apt-get update`.00:31
onefangWhy should that try so many mirrors at once?00:32
EHeMSeveral VMs, I copy downloaded packages around, but I'm not yet large enough to mirror the Packages file.00:33
EHeMJust confirmed 130.225.254.116 is problematic *now*.00:34
EHeMErr, make that the stage where it mentions "Release".00:35
onefangWhich is only failing the updated test for my mirror checker script.00:35
onefangAs of five minutes ago.00:35
onefang131.188.12.211 has "99.50% up" on the weekly statistics, most are on 100%, so yeah that one might have connectivity issues.00:36
onefanghttps://sledjhamr.org/apt-panopticon/results/LOG_mirrors.dotsrc.org.html00:37
a6Y37lEarlier today, I did sudo apt update and learned the devuan security repository no longer has a Release file so apt bypassed that repository.  Was this done by devuan or outside actors?00:55
onefangFor which release?00:56
a6Y37lascii.00:56
onefangI see a Release file there in the master mirror.00:57
fsmithredand update works here. Paste your sources.list somewhere so we can see it. (Not here)00:58
onefangIt was updated about 12 hours ago.00:58
a6Y37lMy mirror was set to US, so it's possible the mirror needs time to populate the other mirrors.00:58
fsmithredyou can remove the us00:59
onefangCountry codes are deprecated.00:59
a6Y37lthanks I'll fix that in my apt-sources.list.01:00
onefangBut yes, most mirrors update themselves once every thirty minutes, the update process might take some time to get all the files up to date.01:00
fsmithredErr:12 http://us.deb.devuan.org/merged ascii-security Release01:01
fsmithred  404  Not Found [IP: 200.236.31.1 80]01:01
mrpfilserconfirm 40401:02
a6Y37lhas anyone got orca up with devuan xfce4 yet?  I tried it and failed.01:03
mrpfilserhttp://us.deb.devuan.org/ works01:03
onefangus.deb.devuan.org is the same as deb.devuan.org, which is the DNS round robin domain, but mirrors are not required to recognise country codes, which is why they are deprecated.  So what ever IP you got that particular time may not be recognising us.deb.devuan.org.01:05
mrpfilseri thank everyone here for my great happy working system01:06
onefanghttp://devuan.c3sl.ufpr.br/merged/dists/ascii-security/Release is there right now, that's the server for 200.236.31.101:07
onefangThe DNS round robin basically gives you what ever random IP from the collection that your DNS server wants to give you that particular minute.01:09
onefangWhich is why my mirror checker starts from the top and probes everything, all the way down.01:10
onefangAnd if that particular IP is a server that doesn't recognise us.deb.devuan.org, then you are SOL.  None of the mirrors are required to.01:13
onefangMirrors that are part of the DNS round robin are required to recognise deb.devuan.org.01:14
XenguyBefore I checked in here tonight, I got an apt-get update error for the 2nd time in 3 days or so.  I removed the country code, and then things started working fine again.01:17
onefangNow you know why.  B-)01:17
a6Y37lgreat, now everything works with apt update!01:18
XenguyWhat about pkgmaster, is it better to use deb rather than the former?01:18
fsmithredyes, please use deb.* so everyone is not hitting on the main server01:18
Xenguyfsmithred: Makes complete sense01:19
onefangpkgmaster is the master that all the other mirrors sync to, and it is part of the DNS round robin, so what fsmithred said.01:19
fsmithredhelp prevent fires in the server center01:19
onefangExactly.01:19
XenguyOK, works for me, and sounds like any lag between pkgmaster and the mirrors has been sorted out with this system (I'm pretty sure that previously there were problems with lag on the mirrors sometimes)01:20
fsmithreddoes the rr direct anyone to pkgmaster?01:20
onefangAs I mentioned, most mirrors update themselves every thirty minutes, so there might be that much lag.01:20
fsmithredpreviously there was a bug that caused the server to stop updating01:20
onefangYes, pkgmaster's IP is in the DNS round robin, I just said that.  B-)01:21
XenguySounds good folks, half an hour is plenty fast01:21
fsmithredI'm really a biology guy, so you need to speak latin for me to understand.01:21
XenguyQuid pro quo01:21
fsmithredNo no no!01:21
onefanglol01:21
Xenguyno, not the ...01:22
fsmithredthanks for that, Xenguy01:22
Xenguyhahah, you're welcome01:22
EHeMHaving the mirrors reject if you use {us|uk|eu|ru}.deb.devuan.org seems like a rather Bad Idea; there may not yet be enough mirrors for proximity to be a notable benefit, but in the future there could be...01:23
a6Y37lLatin experts are needed to recover ancient texts these days, lots of exciting work happening in that area with the technology advances in place.01:23
onefanghttp://borta.devuan.dev/apt-panopticon/results/Report-web.html (updated hourly) and https://sledjhamr.org/apt-panopticon/results/Report-web.html (updated every ten minutes) gives you all the gory details, only not in Latin, sorry.01:23
onefangI wasn't a Devuan mirror herder when the decision to deprecate country codes was made, so no idea why.01:24
onefangOn the other hand, we don't currently have any mirrors in USA.01:25
XenguySurprising01:25
onefangAnd we have a few in Holland.01:26
onefangIt's not so much rejecting the country codes, as only accepting deb.devuan.org, and optionally their own domain name.01:28
DonkeyHoteiwhy not just drop the dns01:28
XenguyGo to IPs?01:29
DonkeyHoteino, go to round-robin only01:29
Xenguyhuh01:29
DonkeyHoteino more country codes01:29
EHeMThe situation urgently needs to stop changing, people are getting tired of these continuous changes and Devuan may have lost many people already...01:30
onefangBackwards compatibility with what we did in the past.01:30
onefangCoz, as is obvious from this conversation, people are still using the country codes.01:30
g4570nHello, I am doing apt update and I am getting errors from different IPs every time I run it, some servers are not synchronized or is there another problem?01:31
onefangI've only recently become a Devuan mirror herder, those changes where made before my time, so I can't comment.01:32
Xenguyg4570n: What mirror are you using?01:32
onefangg4570n: we are just discussing this.01:32
Xenguyin /etc/apt/sources.list01:32
g4570nXenguy: http://auto.mirror.devuan.org/merged01:33
g4570nfor jessie repos01:33
Xenguyg4570n: Maybe try deb.devuan.org ?01:33
onefangAh, an even older domain that is deprecated.  Please use deb.devuan.org instead.01:33
XenguyToo bad redirects couldn't be created, to make things more seamless for more devuanistas01:35
g4570nI just tried again and now he didn't give me the error. But if I get an error with Chimaera repos01:35
g4570nhttp://deb.merged.org/merged chimaera Release01:35
Xenguyseparate issue?01:36
onefangdeb.merged.org?01:36
g4570nyes01:36
g4570nIt does not have a Publication file. "Release"01:36
pencilandpaperWhats up peoples, I don't mean to interrupt but am having issues with my firewall and was wondering if I could ask a question please?01:37
onefangChimaera is new, I think it's destined to be the new "testing" soonish.  I might be wrong.01:37
fsmithredonefang, correct01:38
fsmithredpencilandpaper, don't ask to ask, just ask01:38
fsmithredand then wait.01:38
fsmithredmaybe seconds, minutes, possibly hours. Someone will eventually answer.01:38
onefangSo actually using chimeara right now might not be a good idea.01:39
g4570nonefang: OK thanks. That mistake is not so urgent anyway01:39
pencilandpaperOk cool, thanks.  When its turned on with the default setting..its outgoing allow, incoming deny..01:39
fsmithredyeah, I skipped chimaera and went straight to ceres.01:39
fsmithredalso not a good idea.01:39
pencilandpaperFor some reason though I am unable to connect to the internet with it turned on with those default settings.01:39
pencilandpaperIs there a reason for this fsmithred ..that you know of?01:40
fsmithredmaybe you need to allow outgoing connections?01:40
fsmithredestablished, I think it's called. I don't pay attention to firewall rules.01:40
pencilandpaperI am allowing outgoing settings.01:40
onefangg4570n: the point is I have no idea what deb.merged.org is, it's not an official mirror.  deb.devuan.org is what we recommend people use.01:40
Xenguypencilandpaper: What firewall is it?01:41
pencilandpaperOk, I will look in to it, I was just hoping to get a quick answer.  I appreciate it.01:41
pencilandpaperufw I believe Xenguy , with gufw as the frontend.01:41
Xenguyhuh, that rings a bell; haven't tried it myself01:41
fsmithredseems to be a popular one01:42
g4570nonefang: oh man That's a mistake in my sources.list, let me look at it01:42
pencilandpaperOk, its not bad to be honest Xenguy ..01:42
XenguySo it sounds like you have one of those pesky configuration issues01:42
XenguyI used to run 'shorewall'01:43
XenguyOr w/e it's called01:43
onefangI used to use ufw, but switched to shorewall.01:43
fsmithredthat looks right01:43
fsmithredI use arno-iptables-firewall01:43
fsmithredeasy debconf setup01:43
pencilandpaperMaybe I will check out shorewall..and see how it is.01:43
fsmithredmy favorite was susefirewall, but it's not in debian01:44
Xenguypencilandpaper: Very text file oriented I would say, shorewall that is01:44
onefangI switched to shorewall coz I needed to get my hands dirty, but not so dirty to use whatever is this years flavour of filter rules directly.01:44
onefangOK, to be fair, Linux kernel only changes the filter rule system once a decade.01:46
gnarfacepencilandpaper: you don't need a firewall program to make it do that, you can use iptables and a bash script: http://paste.debian.net/1127355/01:46
fsmithredyou're dating yourself, onefang01:47
Xenguygnarface: You're hardcore : -)01:47
onefangPfft, I turned 59 this week.  ;-P01:47
g4570nonefang: sorry, in the case of Chimaera I had an error in my sources.list, I misused s///g in vim :P01:47
EHeMThat is a pretty darn simple set of `iptables` rules to bother scripting.01:48
pencilandpaperWow, FF is crashing on me after trying to mess with gufw.  brb.01:48
gnarfacewell you can just dump them into your /etc/rc.local instead or something like that01:48
gnarfacei think if you put them into rc.local you need to prepend the full path to the binary though01:49
Xenguy$ pom01:50
XenguyThe Moon is Waning Crescent (1% of Full)01:50
XenguyNew moon01:50
pencilandpaperI think that Firefox messed up after a update.  I'm using Devuan Unstable..so it very well could have been the update.01:51
mrpfilserfirefox-arm is kerputt atm at least for armv801:51
mrpfilseri mean firefox-esr01:52
mrpfilserptitseb says it needs to be built with an older gcc but this is beyond me01:52
pencilandpaperOk, thats what this is..firefox-esr.01:52
pencilandpaperI see..deep..01:53
mrpfilserwell not too many folks are using devuan-arm01:53
pencilandpaperRight, I hear that..although its not working for me right now and I'm running the desktop version..01:53
mrpfilserwhat's the problem?01:53
pencilandpaperIt crashes when trying to open it.01:54
mrpfilsertry launching from a terminal - get any errors?01:54
pencilandpaperExceptionHandler::SendContinueSignalToChild sent continue signal to child01:56
mrpfilseri get "Illegal instruction" with Version: 68.4.1esr-101:57
mrpfilseryou have security update from a couple weeks ago?01:58
fsmithredI've got 68.4.2esr-1 in ceres and it works (it starts)01:59
pencilandpaperOk..02:00
golinuxI don't think that chimera will be functional until the beowulf release02:00
pencilandpaperI just uninstalled it and installed firefox 72 and it doesn't start for me either.02:01
golinux<g4570n> 66602:01
g4570ngolinux: Yes, I added it on a test PC, for fun. I will not use it for now xD02:02
fsmithredI kept beowulf in my sources.list when I upgraded to ceres, because there are a few packages in beowulf that are newer02:03
fsmithredand yeah, this is just a test system02:03
pencilandpaperI think that its a libcurl issue.02:07
pencilandpaperBrb.02:07
Xenguy.oO( The number of The Beast )02:08
g4570n🤔02:09
Xenguy^^ doesn't render here02:10
onefangI dunno, I tried ringing that number, and didn't get through to The Beast.02:11
* pencilandpaper ponders a browser to use until FF starts working again. 🤔02:13
g4570nXenguy: https://0x0.st/ir1O.png02:13
g4570nonefang: congratulations, apt-panopticon is a great tool. I don't know if someone mentioned it to you before but the blue links with the black background are a bit difficult to read. At least it happens to me xD02:17
mrpfilserpossibley 68.4.2 didn't make it to -arm because of that build issue02:17
onefangThanks, and I guess I should lighten the blue.02:18
onefangActually I'm not setting the colour of links at all, just the black background.02:21
onefangSo that'll be your web browsers choice of link colour then.  B-)02:23
g4570nyes, blue is for default :P02:26
onefang alink="red" link="aqua" vlink="fuchsia"  Will that work for you?02:32
onefangLooks good enough for me.02:35
pencilandpaperI'll run Midori until Firefox works again.  Its a working browser.02:38
onefangsledjhamr now has the brighter colours, borta will have to wait until it's next scheduled check in about forty minutes.02:42
g4570nonefang: Now, much better :)02:44
* onefang smiles.02:44
g4570nonefang: these are still blue: https://sledjhamr.org/apt-panopticon/results/LOG_deb.devuan.org_190.64.49.124.html02:57
g4570nI don't know if your .css file is global or is on every page02:58
Xenguyg4570n: Thanks, cute03:03

g4570nok03:05
Xenguypencilandpaper: I like Waterfox these days03:05
XenguyNot packaged in devuan tho03:07
onefangLog file colours fixed now.  Don' task me about the colours on the graph pages, that is someone elses code.03:09
g4570nonefang: thank you, you are awesome :)03:14
* onefang smiles again.03:15
mrpfilserwhat are your firefox alternatives (with working javascript)03:22
mrpfilseri'll check out midori03:23
onefangPale Moon is what I use.03:23
onefangAlso not packaged for Debian / Devuan.03:24
mrpfilseri'm using it now, mostly annoyance-free onefang03:26
mrpfilserexcept when i click on the browser it insists on replacing my clipboard-buffer with the current webpage url03:27
mrpfilserthat is, if i click anywhere inside the page - clicking in the menu area etc to switch focus to pale moon doesn't replace the clipboard03:28
mrpfilserdid you build it with an extra-lean .mozconfig onefang ?03:29
onefangI use deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/stevenpusser/Debian_9.0/ / for Pale Moon, not building it myself.03:32
mrpfilseroh he did an arm build too? who is this wizard03:35
onefangSteven Pusser is the author of Pale Moon.03:36
fsmithredonefang, I think Steve is just the packager03:46
onefangAh I think you are correct, it is the official Pale Moon package repo though.03:47
onefanghttp://linux.palemoon.org/03:48
fsmithredhe packages a lot of stuff03:48
mrpfilsercool beans, i'll try his build03:48
mrpfilsermine seems to have 1/2 the cpu use on the pages i tested04:01
mrpfilsercan you suggest a browser performance test page?04:01
pencilandpaperI hear you there Xenguy , but I tried running it on Devuan a while ago and it wouldn't start for me for some reason.04:35
pencilandpaperSo I just installed Midori and am riding it for now.04:36
mrpfilserbrowserbench.org/JetStream is taking ages to finish04:36
mrpfilserthat's not a helpful test. half an hour and it's 2/12 of the way though04:43
raizim having an issue with this fresh install of devuan with FDE, when shutting down, sda2_crypt fails to deactivate because its busy and after timing out the machine forcefully shuts down regardless. JorilAren't xx.deb.devuan.org mirrors not recommended?10:22
onefangI've been saying this all day.  lol10:22
onefangUsing country codes is deprecated, using deb.devuan.org is the proper way.10:23
EHeMBreaking the country code mirrors seems rather short-sighted, if in the future the Devuan project grows large having mirrors indicated by country code could be valuable; having them simply cycle among all the mirrors is fine for now, but breaking them seems a poor choice.10:27
HumIf devuan lacks man-power today the project has to manage the short ressources today10:43
djph^^ it's the same idea that everyone uses these days.  DNS servers point a generic URL to "close-ish" hosts.11:26
mrpfilserpretty sure you can still specify a different host, but it might not be there in a week or so, right?11:39
GyrosGeierthe other question is: why are broken mirrors still in DNS?11:40
onefangOne of the goals of my mirror checker is to use it to figure out if a particular mirror should be in the DNS round robin.  It has already been used to remove a faulty mirror.11:42
GyrosGeierdoes your mirror checker do IPv6? :)11:43
onefangYep.11:44

jaromileheh what doesn't12:00
onefangIn this case I mean "it's not reached a release yet".12:00
onefangIt would have earlier this month, if it wasn't for that unexpected server migration that's soaked up a lot of my time.12:01

Digiti re-encountered https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=2877 no ceres release file problem today (i use "gb.", if that specific matters).  applied the s/ceres/unstable/ workaround successfully.  mentioning because of fsmithred's request to, at end of that thread.13:43
fsmithredDigit, thanks. Actually, that was an old fix, and there have been newer and better fixes of the repos. None of those fixes fixed the problem with country codes. Remove the country code and just use deb.devuan.org and it will work correctly.14:06
Digitoh.   thanks.14:07
fsmithredyw14:07
Digitglad i mentioned the country code.  :)14:07
fsmithredlots of people are running into this lately14:07
fsmithred<onefang> The DNS round robin basically gives you what ever random IP from the collection that your DNS server wants to give you that particular minute.14:10

golinuxtuxd3v: pkgmaster is the source for the round-robbin.  If everyone uses it it will get hammered and slow things down.  You should use deb.devuan.org18:10
tuxd3vgolinux, thanks I will try :)18:18
golinuxtuxd3v: Thanks18:19
tuxd3vgolinux, you welcome, I tried to use https and it gives me a error in the certificate, probably dueto the CNAME used to issue the  certificate probably it comes from another place..18:26
tuxd3vI will use http for now18:27
golinuxYes.  Not all of the mirrors have https available18:28
tuxd3vprobably is the dns doing round robin18:28
golinuxhttps://pkgmaster.devuan.org/mirror_list.txt18:29
golinuxhttps://pkgmaster.devuan.org/devuan_mirror_walkthrough.txt18:30
onefangtuxd3v: Correct, the various mirrors don't have the HTTPS certificate for deb.devuan.org, only their own if they support HTTPS (which all of them do).  So if you want to use HTTPS, bost to use a mirror directly, and not through the deb.devuan.org DNS round robin.19:26
cc___hello people20:25
cc___I'm new to devuan, I'd like to know if the repositories are reliable at the moment20:25
cc___I've had failures quite often when doing apt updates and I'd like to know if I'm the only one to experience that20:26
