mikel_I have a problem with the grub after upgrade to devuan 301:08
mikel_I find the black screen with the grub> label01:09
mikel_I can access the distro after performing the following commands:01:09
mikel_grub> set root=(hd1,gpt2)01:09
mikel_grub> linux /boot/vmlinuz-*********** root=/dev/sda201:09
mikel_grub> initrd /boot/initrd.img-**********01:09
mikel_grub> boot01:09
mikel_I try to install-reinstall grub (as I was able to do on other occasions) by doing:01:09
mikel_sudo update-grub (also tried sudo update-grub2)01:09
mikel_sudo grub-install /dev/sda01:09
mikel_But when I restart I get the grub> label again.01:09
fsmithred mikel_ bios or uefi? gpt or msdos partition table?01:30
fsmithredok, I see gpt01:31
fsmithredif uefi, are you using secure boot? Is grub package signed or unsigned?01:32
mikel_no, I heve unabled01:35
mikel_I have01:35
n4dirgerman?01:36
mikel_I dont know what is it. I install doing sudo grub-install01:37
fsmithredthat should work for uefi01:37
fsmithredyou have a proper efi partition?01:38
fsmithredalso 'sudo update-grub' to generate a menu01:38
mikel_I have devuan for 4-5 years and normally works doing sudo update-grub, but not now01:38
fsmithredwhich grub package do you have?01:39
fsmithreddpkg -l | grep grub-efi01:39
mikel_ii grub-efi-amd64, ..amd64-bin, ..amd64-signed01:41
fsmithredtry removing grub-efi-amd64-signed and then run the grub commands again.01:42
mikel_an d also ii grub-eg=fi-ia32-bin01:42
fsmithredyou only need the -signed if you're using secure boot01:43
mikel_how can I do that?01:43
fsmithredand I now know that you installed from the desktop-live iso01:43
fsmithredapt remove grub-efi-amd64-signed01:43
mikel_ok, thanks, i try now01:43
fsmithredyou can also remove grub-efi-ia32-bin01:43
fsmithredit's not needed unless you're running an old macbook pro01:44
mikel_ah, ok, I make update-grub after removing? or update-grub2?01:46
fsmithredupdate-grub01:46
fsmithredI assume they are the same thing. I have never run update-grub201:46
fsmithredbrb01:46
mikel_I reboot, but dont work yet. I open the bios and in the boot sequence section I have: devuan and \EFI\devuan\grubx64.efi01:49
mikel_the secure boot enable is off01:49
fsmithredare those two different choices?01:52
fsmithredgrubx64.efi should boot if you can choose that or set it as first01:53
mikel_no, I have only devuan in disk01:53
fsmithredok, then I don't understand what you said about the boot sequence01:53
fsmithreddevuan and \EFI\devuan\grubx64.efi are two different things, or are they one thing?01:54
mikel_I go to delete 'devuan' option01:54
fsmithreddo you know what it is you are deleting? Because I don't know what it is.01:55
mikel_ok, now it works!! after doing update-grub and grub-install /dev/sda01:56
mikel_thanks you very very mucth for your time01:56
fsmithredyw.01:56
fsmithredwhat is at /boot/efi/EFI/  now?01:57
fsmithreddevuan or debian?01:57
mikel_I think one optios in boot sequence i devuan, and other os de avanced options that is in de grub menu01:58
mikel_I have devuan only in this laptop01:58
fsmithredthat's not what I'm asking01:58
fsmithredls /boot/efi/EFI01:58
fsmithreddevuan or debian?01:59
mikel_sure devuan, cause I have not debian installed01:59
fsmithredyeah, ok01:59
mikel_thanks a lot, muchas gracias02:00
fsmithreddid you actually look in that directory, or are you just telling me that because you know what os you installed?02:00
fsmithredand yes, I believe you know what os you installed02:00
mikel_I hadn't touched that section of the boot for years, so I don't know how that option came to be there02:02
fsmithredsometimes you get a directory named debian and it will also say debian in the boot menu02:03
fsmithredit's the grub -signed package that does it, and it only has to be like that for secure boot.02:04
mikel_interesting, I go write in my notes about this happend02:04
mikel_thanks again, good night!02:13

systemdlete(different day, different problem).  So my testbox's disk is weird.  It was working, booting normally, until yesterday when I RE-installed beowulf (in the same partition, /dev/sda3).   Strangely, I can boot from a grub prompt (grub is no longer there?).04:02
systemdleteBackground:  While RE-installing beowulf, at the grub install step, it said that apparently there were no other OSs on the disk.  (BS!  There were/are plenty).  So I aborted the grub step and went on to finish the install, figuring I'd handle this afterward.04:03
systemdleteI don't get why it thought there were no other OS's.  fdisk -l /dev/sda shows all my partitions, and as I said, I can mount several of them and I see files on them, etc.04:04
systemdleteThe disk is gpt partitioned.  There is a BIOS partition, yada yada.  It was all working until I re-installed beowulf.04:05
systemdleteThis is the same box that has the ASUS nvidia card.  Not sure that is related or not, though I doubt it.04:05
systemdleteah-yah-yah.04:05
systemdletehappy t-giving to all my American compatriots04:29
systemdletegreetings to all others04:29
