gourmorning. installed devuan (ceres) on my netbook  - it looks nice! slim/wicd makes it light, but wonder what is the future of wicd? if i replace it with networkmanager, iirc, i have to change slim as well, right?09:06

kreyrenMy X suddenly stopped working and I have no idea what this means u.u09:32
kreyrenix.io/2VmQ xorg log09:33
* kreyren is in TTY and cant use paste.debian.org09:33
* kreyren is concerned it being a hardware damage as he was just in X when it suddenly stopped working09:34
rmkreyren, no kernel or driver upgrades?09:34
rmor you mean X worked and then locked up or something09:35
rmand after reboot no longer works?09:35
kreyren<rm "Krey, no kernel or driver upgrad"> None that I know of, but I did a system updated after the failure09:35
kreyren<rm "and after reboot no longer works"> Yes09:35
kreyren<rm "or you mean X worked and then lo"> I was on X looking at email when it suddenly stopped working09:36
kreyrenI was playing games on this system yesterday without any issues09:36
rmtry a live USB with some GUI OS09:37
kreyren<rm "try a live USB with some GUI OS"> OK09:37
kreyrenI loaded older kernel without nvidia driver in modules and it loads nouveau just fine09:39
kreyrenAh this is not nouveau but llvmpipe09:41
kreyrenChecking09:41
kreyrenNouveau hardbricks the system.. trying the liveCD09:43
kreyreni can't figure out why i can't load systemrescuecd from flashdisk on this system x.x10:43
kreyrendid `sudo dd if=systemrescue-8.01-amd64.iso.1 of=/dev/sdc status=progress`, but bios doesn't want to load it10:44
kreyrenBoots now10:50
kreyren... for some reason the BIOS thinks that the USB is a floppy drive10:50
kreyrenNope doesnt work even when it boots (happened once) it fails to complete init11:09
kreyrenu.u11:09
gnarfaceis it a p3 era system or something like that?11:09
gnarfacep2?11:09
gnarfaceif it's a very old motherboard that can only boot the usb port as a floppy, the trick is you format it as a 100MB ATA FLOPPY disk11:10
gnarfacethere is such a thing, just google it or something11:10
gnarfacethen you just need to find boot disk that fits inside 100MB11:10
gnarfacei think the spec may have an option for 200MB even, motherboard support might not follow though11:11

kreyrenAlso I am now getting these dots when I unload nvidia and load in the system11:11
kreyren<gnarface "is it a p3 era system or somethi"> No this is Z68A-D3-B3, but it has a really shitty BIOS11:12
kreyrenu.u11:12
gnarfaceoh, well double check the flash process worked right11:12
gnarfacei see two possible problems; you didn't run "sync" afterwards or use conv=fsync on your command-line for dd, and also that input file name... looks like it could be a firefox partial download cause of the .1 extension...11:13
gnarfaceor wget does that maybe?11:13
kreyreni did run sync afterwards11:13
gnarfacemight mean the file didn't finish downloading or might mean you had 2 copies on disk11:13
kreyrenThe file has been downloaded using wget x.x11:13
kreyrenchecking shasum11:13
gnarfacesorry about the dots though, video ram has bad spots11:14
* kreyren < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/SwhoUahBJBiXQglKchaVXgEl/message.txt >11:14
gnarfacethat's common with old nvidia cards; vendors often crippled their cooling solutions11:14
kreyren<gnarface "that's common with old nvidia ca"> yes this GPU has a terrible cooling for the VRAM causing it to overheat, but i have 12VDC PSU connected to the fans to it should keep it cool assuming that running on 100% all the time11:15
kreyren(100% fans)11:15
kreyren<gnarface "sorry about the dots though, vid"> also what does that mean? damaged VRAM?11:15
gnarfaceyea, looks like a textbook example of fried ram11:16
kreyrenx.x11:17
gnarfaceseen it tons of times11:17
kreyrenHow to verify that?11:17
gnarfacemy condolences11:17
gnarfaceuh... envytools might have something11:17
kreyreni have an equipment to do SMD soldering and diagnostics here11:17
gnarfacei don't know of anything like a memtest for video ram11:17
gnarfacebut corrupted pixels or font glyphs in text mode is a dead giveaway it's the video ram11:17
kreyrenaaaaaaaaaaaa11:18
gnarfacesince it's a nvidia card you might be able to use their official dev kit - "envytools" i think it's called?  i don't know much about it but maybe you can also use it to get some low-level diagnostics out of the card11:19
gnarfacei've run into a thing where they use thermal compound that expires11:19
gnarfaceif you can actually repair it i'd also recommend making sure you clean and re-apply some better quality thermal compound11:20
gnarfaceyou might get a longer lifespan out of it that way11:20
gnarfaceif the stuff is just sticky black goo after 6 months - clean that off with rubbing alcohol and use any other stuff11:21
kreyrenwhere do i get the envytools?11:21
gnarfacegotta go through nvidia official channels i think11:21
kreyrenalso the green dots dissapear when i hover around them with a cursor11:21
gnarfaceif there's a debian package for it, it would be in non-free11:21
gnarfacewith compositing, i could see how that's possible11:22
gnarfaceit might not be very much of the ram either11:22
gnarfaceif it's working at all it couldn't be11:22
gnarfaceusually just a few speckles here and there but some stuff will crash11:22
kreyreni am currently on it, screenshot doesn't show these and they are not visible around the cursor so that makes me think software-related?11:23
kreyrenI would assume these being all over the screen with cursor not having an effect on it?11:23
gnarfacei think if it is actually overheating severely it could exhibit these symptoms temporarily without being permanent damage yet but i've never seen that in real life11:23
* kreyren uploaded an image: (29KiB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/kwnooWWEkgBjBSZwszwGcjuY/image.png >11:23
kreyren^ on my monitor there is bunch of green dots in this11:23
gnarfaceno my theory is the compositor's interaction with the mouse cursor is just moving that region of the display to a different part of ram11:24
gnarfacei don't know though really i'm just speculating11:24
kreyreni see O.o11:24
gnarfacein theory it could be software related i've just never seen that happen that way either11:24
gnarfacein most cases the situation will quickly degrade over the next few days of use and then you'll know for sure11:25
gnarfaceif you find a way to memtest that vram though let me know11:25
kreyrenwindows seems to have lots of tools for VRAM checking https://www.raymond.cc/blog/having-problems-with-video-card-stress-test-its-memory/11:30
kreyrenhttps://github.com/ihaque/memtestCL#:~:text=MemtestCL%20is%20a%20program%20to,as%20the%20closed%2Dsource%20version.11:31
kreyreni guess?11:31
gnarfacehmm, CL? maybe would work11:32
kreyrenhttps://github.com/ihaque/memtestG80 ?11:33
gnarfacedunno11:33
gnarfaceworty a try maybe11:33
gnarfaceyou can use checkinstall if it's not debianized11:34
* kreyren < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/slyXYXjmwPzvpTQpENmGBGLH/message.txt >11:35
kreyrenx.x11:35
kreyrencheckinstall?11:35
kreyrenfound https://docs.nvidia.com/cuda/cuda-installation-guide-linux/index.html11:38
kreyrenah nvcc is in nvidia-cuda-toolkit package11:55
kreyrenx.x11:55
kreyrendlocate didn't show that u.u11:55
kreyrengnarface the memtestG80 works but it requires the GPU already loaded and working12:08
kreyrenI am getting corruption on TTY too so I assume that being a VRAM failure u.u12:08
* kreyren goes to grab GTX1080 from his inventory12:08
* kreyren is sad that he cant use nouveau12:08
tuxd3vkreyren, does you found a way to load pascal firmware from proprietary driver for nouveau acceleration?20:27
daimonhey all having a minor problem I think21:19
daimonI need a later version of git, the latest version availible for devaun appears to be 5.20.1 I require 5.22.0 or greater21:20
daimonhow would I go about updating to the later one, 5.20.1 is quite a few releases behind, it seems git is actually on 5.30.n at the moment (looking at their tags on github)21:20
furrymcgeethere is git 2.29 in beowulf-backports https://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/policy-query.html?c=package&q=git21:37
Antofoxtest22:33
golinuxIt worked22:34
Antofoxnot on devuan-dev22:35
Antofox:(22:35
golinuxTalk to parazyd.  It's not an open list afaik22:36
AntofoxoO22:37
Antofoxsince when is it closed?22:37
golinuxFor a very long time.  Maybe "closed" isn't quite the right word22:38
golinuxMayebe your name has to be registered with freenode pr something.22:39
golinuxI can't quite remember . . .22:39
Antofoxah22:39
Antofoxstrange22:39
AntofoxI've always written there22:39
golinuxparazyd would be the one to talk to.22:39
Antofoxokok22:41
Antofoxthanks22:41
Antofox@parazyd I've always been there22:43
Antofoxbut ok, if you don't want to go away22:44
xrogaan<Antofox> but ok, if you don't want to go away23:11
xrogaan^---- you're joking, right?23:12
xrogaanso far I can see, there is no mode set on the channel to prevent unregistered users from joining or talking.23:13
xrogaanthere is a quiet mode on '$~a' though, which is probably for non-registered users.23:15
