rkta | I migrated another laptop to devuan, but this one refuses to play sound on my tv connected to hdmi. I'm able to get sound with speaker test. On my other machines I use pulsemixer to move programs to different outputs, need that for a bluetooth headset. But now, I don't see the output in pulsemixer. If I connect the headset I get sound, but it isn't shown in pulsemixer either. How can I debug this? | 08:48 |

rkta | Ok, after following random advices from the internet, reinstalling and other stuff, I got it to work from one specific terminal. I have no idea why, just hope it will not break again :) | 09:36 |
rkta | After 20 years, sound under linux still sucks. | 09:36 |
Hunter[m] | Oh yeah, I forgot, speaking of pipewire I think the pipewire-pulse package uses systemd commands to replace pulseaudio so it doesnt work on Devuan. I tried installing it last night and it didnt work. | 15:45 |
GyrosGeier | [urge to write a "libaudio" that just wraps all the other systems intensifies] | 16:06 |
FatPhil | Yikes, it looks like one of my machines is Debian 9.13, what's the stablest devuan I can upgrade it to with the least chance of breakage? | 16:40 |
FatPhil | I honestly thought I'd converted everything to devuan, this one must have slipped through. | 16:40 |
brocashelm | is that stretch? try ascii or beowulf (buster) | 16:46 |
brocashelm | https://devuan.org/os/releases | 16:49 |
FatPhil | currently working my way through this: https://forum.khadas.com/t/how-to-convert-debian-or-ubuntu-to-devuan-vim3-and-perhaps-others/8662 | 16:51 |
FatPhil | chosen ASCII, as that seems the smallest change. | 16:52 |
FatPhil | If I want to boot a ubuntu live-USB from within my devuan, is there any way simpler than virtualbox, which i have vague memories of getting to work 5 years ago. | 17:22 |
astrolul | hello | 19:01 |
Successus | Hello, do you have a question about Devuan? | 19:01 |
astrolul | yes so basically i cannot find where devuan stores services and i want to enable libvirtd on runit but all the folders i have been told only have getty in them | 19:03 |
Successus | Someone that knows will respond, wait a bit | 19:09 |
Hydragyrum | GyrosGeier: https://xkcd.com/927 | 19:18 |
fsmithred | astrolul, here's more information on runit run scripts. https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=3716 | 19:30 |
fsmithred | and actual scripts you can use, too. | 19:30 |
astrolul | so i cant just enable them like in void? | 19:39 |
astrolul | im confused | 19:40 |
fsmithred | astrolul, no, there are no run scripts to enable. You have to add them. There are a couple of good sources for scripts, and they are linked in that thread. | 19:53 |
astrolul | i dont see the point in having a runit iso then if u have to manually get scripts there should probably be a warning | 19:53 |
fsmithred | If you want an example to play with, I made a live-iso that has some services converted to runit.. Updated it yesterday. | 19:53 |
fsmithred | it's in a directory named "experimental" so I think that's warning enough. | 19:54 |
fsmithred | https://get.refracta.org/files/experimental/refracta_runit_test_amd64-20211119_0046.iso | 19:54 |
fsmithred | The point is to get people using runit and contributing more run scripts. Ultimate goal is to maintain diversity in the ecosystem. | 19:58 |
astrolul | fsmithred do u know if openrc devuan has scripts preinstalled? | 19:58 |
astrolul | i dont like messing around with custom scripts and having to maintain them and stuff | 19:59 |
astrolul | guys i have a weird issue | 22:12 |
astrolul | so basically when i boot the devuan iso and go through the steps then connect to wifi | 22:12 |
astrolul | it defaults to wep and doesnt let me choose like it usually does | 22:12 |
gnarface | astrolul: which ISO? | 22:23 |
gnarface | astrolul: sounds like a firmware issue, but the isos should contain the non-free wifi firmware unless you have very new hardware | 22:23 |
astrolul | the netinstall | 22:24 |
astrolul | its the same one i used before | 22:24 |
astrolul | it always worked but now it wont when i try to reinstall its very weird | 22:24 |
astrolul | its a thinkpad x230 anyway | 22:25 |
gnarface | astrolul: weird... anything in dmesg about it? | 22:30 |
astrolul | gnarface i havent checked yet but i think im just gonna use ethernet for the reinstall then connect to wifi manually once its installed | 22:36 |
gnarface | astrolul: that usually works better but it should have worked if it worked before... unless there was either hardware failure or some other unknown variable | 22:37 |
gnarface | astrolul: i would have tried a cold boot just in case | 22:47 |
astrolul | gnarface thing is i have restarted like multiple times into the iso | 22:57 |
astrolul | its weird but i can confirm it was working before and it would let me choose between wep and wpa | 22:57 |
gnarface | astrolul: sometimes a cold-boot is necessary because with certain hardware it's occasionally possible for a driver crash to crash the device so hard it stays locked-up through a warm reboot | 23:01 |
astrolul | if by cold boot u mean fully shutdown then start up again then i have done that | 23:03 |
astrolul | i have another idea before i try ethernet tho | 23:03 |
astrolul | imma jst disconnect the battery n then reattach and boot | 23:03 |
onefang | An even colder boot. | 23:06 |
