TuvixHard to say if this is just a recovery-bump or a trend, but the US is not fairly flat on 7-day average deaths for the last week or so, sitting around 12x annual influenza death rate (when expressed as a weekly per-capita rate)00:13

[... want %more?] → https://twitter.com/ScottGottliebMD/status/150320724248047206404:18
TuvixTo the point above about being more lethal, I'd argue all the waves have had similar lethality if you look at the breakdown of deaths by age. Vaccination gives people better odds, although that ignores the immune-compromised that we're condeming to vastly worse outcomes for groups vaccination doesn't have the same effect in.04:23
BrainstormNew from Reddit (test): CoronaVirus_2019_nCoV: A New Process Of SARS-CoV-2 Variation Uncovered: Intragenomic Recombination → https://old.reddit.com/r/CoronaVirus_2019_nCoV/comments/tdnt15/a_new_process_of_sarscov2_variation_uncovered/04:36

TuvixThere's talk sometimes of "de-coupling" of adverse effects (hospital, ICU, or death) from case-peaks, but I'm noticing looking at some US states that there's a perverse kind of decoupling where deaths remain high even well after case-rates have come down, although "down" being relative to the huge surge of Omicron here.05:31
TuvixThat's of course the wrong kind of decoupling as it means those places are seeing consistent death rates well after you'd expect them to continue. Either they're working through more at-risk populations (older, under-vaccinated, or immune-deficient) or are largely not getting reported on official tests.05:32
TuvixEg: compare death outcomes in NY, WI, & FL to see outcomes, despite case-rates falling off notably in all 3: https://ig.ft.com/coronavirus-chart/?areas=usa&areasRegional=usny&areasRegional=uswi&areasRegional=usfl&startDate=2021-06-01&values=deaths#chart-us05:34
