xisopgnarface: sorry for answering so late. RTX 2080 Super01:19
gnarfacexisop: i was just gonna help you find out where it was supported, did you figure it out?01:28
xisopgnarface: i hand't looked at it yet01:28
gnarfacethat's nvidia, right?01:29
xisopyes01:29
xisopsomething tells me linus has something to say about it :D01:30
gnarfacehere, go down this list and find the oldest one that lists it https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/unix/01:31
fatalsome things never change sadly, not even in a decade.01:32
xisopthis might be it https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/148589/en-us/01:33
gnarface(if you click on the driver version link then then click on the "supported products" tab it lists all the GPUs supported at that version, you want to ideally use the oldest one after or equal to 510.x because that's what is in stable, but if it's supported in backports that's not too bad either, things get messy if you have to go newer than that)01:33
xisopyeah, i'm pretty positive that link is it01:33
gnarfaceoh, all the way bcak to 430.x ok you should be fine with stable01:34
gnarfacenote, do not download this from nvidia.com, get it from the devuan repos from the non-free section01:34
gnarfaceour debian-packaged ones will behave better than nvidia's shell script mess01:34
xisopok01:34
gnarfacewe just had to make sure you didn't need a newer version than what's in chimaera already01:35
fatalanother option would be using nouveau driver instead01:35
gnarfaceprobably not for that card01:36
gnarfaceit's way too new01:36
fataloh, ok. didn't know.01:37
gnarfacexisop: there's like a couple dozen packages though i can help you take an inventory after you start installing them01:37
gnarfacefatal: everything from the 900 family and up has some cryptography bullshit blocking the firmware access and last i heard that was unlikely to ever change, support in nouveau peaked with the 780 cards01:38
xisopok01:38
gnarfacefatal: actually i could be wrong, looks like they made come progress on the 900 and 1000 series cards: https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/FeatureMatrix.html01:41
gnarfacethe 2000's look too new still though01:42
gnarfacemade some*01:42
gnarfacealthough i'd be leery of using it on anything with the power management section still marked TODO because that's how you fry your card01:43
fatalbut isn't nvidia working an open source variant? maybe it is too early to use it.01:49
gnarfacei thought that was only for tegra stuff01:50
gnarface(mobile)01:50
gnarfacefor the desktop cards they still seem to have a vested interest in making the windows version look better artificially01:52
gnarfaceas recently as last week someone was reporting a severe performance drop for pascal family cards with the latest linux drivers01:52
siduckhi, anyone up?07:45
siduckloving devuan so far but its ram usage seems very high as compared to other distros, it uses like 400 ~ mb even in TTY!!07:46
siducklook https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/635625925748457482/1052113106345660466/image.png07:46
siducki completely debloated my system ( even removed unneeded services etc ) , look at the free command output and ps_mem program output07:46
siduckno distro ever took more than 100 mb in tty for me before :(07:46
SmilexHey! I've been unable to run software that certifies with SSL for some time now. Is this a Devuan issue?07:52
SmilexSpecifically it's happening while trying to install emscripten07:52
Smilexactually, I think it's specific to python07:52
siduckSmilex https://github.com/emscripten-core/emscripten/issues/903607:53
siduckhow much is your ram usage after reboot? ( check in tty with free -h)07:57
Smilexok, last time I disabled it and it worked. I was wondering why the issue occurred though07:58
Smilexsiduck: are you asking me, or am I missing a conversation?07:59
siduckoh i asked for some help previously :(  , ig it got lost! Smilex07:59
siduckso basically this07:59
siduckloving devuan so far but its ram usage seems very high as compared to other distros, it uses like 400 ~ mb even in TTY!!08:00
siduckcheck https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/635625925748457482/1052113106345660466/image.png08:00
siducki completely debloated my system ( even removed unneeded services etc ) , look at the free command output and ps_mem program output08:00
siduckno distro ever took more than 100 mb in tty for me before :(08:00
siduckif there's no fix for this then i'll just use another debian distro08:00
Smilexlooks like only 14 mb are explained there?08:01
siduckyes but look at the output of free -h08:01
Smilextry running htop, and seeing what's the culprit?08:04
siducki did, i couldnt find anything08:04
siducka sec, i'll share the output of ps aux08:04
siduckhttps://paste.sh/Bsf-ZAYz#hl9infHikmHeVb70ZXCCBnjk08:04
Smilexjust to make sure, did you disable launching a DE or WM or similar?08:08
siduckyes08:08
siduckthe image you see is of a tty08:08
siduckso there's no chance of running DE/WM in the background08:08
Smilexyeah I can see it in the output too08:09
SmilexI tried googling, but found no one else reporting this08:09
siducksame :((08:09
Smilexdo you know if "free -h" shows virtual memory?08:09
siduckim not sure, never happened with other distros for me08:09
Smilexhave you tried other non-systemd distros?08:10
siduckyes, void, artix etc08:10
siduckdwm with void/artix never went more than 150 mb for me08:10
siduckand devuan here! ugghh!08:11
siduckbtw im using 6.0 kernel08:11
SmilexAha! It's Rust!08:11
SmilexI'm kidding08:11
SmilexI have no idea08:11
Smilexbut yeah, you'd have to verify that if it happens with Debian08:12
Smilexand if it happens because of the newer kernel08:12
siducki'll see it with antix08:13
SompiWhat just happened? The whole internet seems to have splitted17:19
spine-o-sauruswhen I run upgrade I get error:libelogind-compat: conflicts: libsystemd017:43
spine-o-saurusalso error:libelogind-compat:i386: conflicts: libsystemd017:43
spine-o-saurusbroken packages17:44
spine-o-saurusnm had to trigger the full upgrade17:51
___usedNetworkManager is the spawn of systemd...18:44
FatPhilSompi: it could be explained by the missing buff/cache column in your top. You can dig deeper in /proc/meminfo perhaps18:45
FatPhiloops, was that a wrong tab-complete!18:45
FatPhilsiduck: it could be explained by the missing buff/cache column in your top. You can dig deeper in /proc/meminfo perhaps18:46
ravehaver9000tried to replace sysvinit with s6 a few days ago, but failed due to lack of real knowledge21:16
ravehaver9000after that i almost switched to another distro again because the screen sudenly blacked out and my system suddenly refused to log me in but i realized as soon as i woke up today that it was nouveau who was behind it so i just installed the propietary drivers as soon as i could do it and its working just fine21:17
gnarfacethe proprietary drivers don't trace their own dependencies well, so if something else fails to work later it might just be from missing packages21:28
plasma41ravehaver9000: I wrote you this on #devuan-dev the other day just before you signed off. Not sure if you saw it:22:31
plasma41ravehaver9000: To use PGP with claws, install the claws-mail-pgpinline and claws-mail-pgpmime packages22:31
plasma41ravehaver9000: I also sent this a few seconds too late after you signed off:22:32
plasma41ravehaver9000: If you can test out s6 and resolve any bugs you encounter then I would recommend you collaborate with rrq to get s6 included as an option in the installer isos.22:32
xisopis rootless startx something that's in development?22:56
xisopi've seen it mentioned a few times in the mailing list22:56
gnarfacexisop: default now on most fresh installs if you have a video card driver that supports it (basically anything but nvidia's proprietary ones)23:46
xisopgnarface: ah, i see. is that something that can be migrated to? I installed chimaera I want to say almost a year ago23:47
gnarfacexisop: uh, theoretically but the details elude me23:57
gnarfacecheck to see if you have a package installed called xserver-xorg-legacy23:57
gnarfaceand if not, check to make sure you're not already using it without root (it'd be logging to ~/.local/share/ if so)23:58
